21st Hunt [Video] What is and what never should be

[The video shows Dean in the locker room at the hospital. He's wearing scrubs and staring at a letter. His brow is furrowed as he attempts to figure out what the letter means. Abruptly he crumbles up the letter, scrubs a hand over his hair and starts pacing the locker room.]

This could change everything. I'd be able to send Ruby to that private school. Jo's father might--

[He stops himself there because he's not even sure he wants to hope for that. It's too much of everything he wants and money or not he'll never be a surgeon. Not like Cas.]

I don't know why though. Out of everyone...why would he leave it all to me? I didn't even know him...

[ooc:Genre swtich. The SPN crew is now part of the City Place Anatomy @ the hospital. Male Nurse Dean's impressionable niece Ruby, who is living with her uncle after her Daddy, Sam, had that stint in rehab, finds a pair of boxers in the laundry that certainly aren't his. Confronting long-time love Surgical Resident Jo, she tearily confesses that her father, disapproving of Dean, set her up with the handsome neurosurgeon Castiel. High-class Jo has more in common with him than Male Nurse Dean, and they started a torrid affair. Responses will be from

[Nearby, Dr. Anna Milton is sitting on a bench in her surgical scrubs, leaning against the wall with her eyes closed. She doesn't appear to have noticed him yet.]

[Dean only notices her when he rounds the corner, stopping abruptly]

Dr. Milton...hey.

[And he tries for that ridiculous grin that makes him popular with the female patients.]

Taking a break?

[It's a wide scale outbreak of crazy. Of course the network screens are being monitored.]

What are you doing?

Dean? What's going on? Where's Ruby?

Something like that. Last surgery went a little rough, needed to catch my thoughts.

[She returns the smile wanly.]

They seem to have scattered of late.

[Dr. Castiel doesn't see his favorite nurse (to mock) as he hurries out of his office on the way to meet with his residents. Rather than greeting him, he runs into him, sending files sprawling across the floor. He pins Dean with a scowl (a bratty one at that) before bending down to collect his things.]

Nice, real nice. You can't just keep the assaults to my person out of the hospital-- you owe me a new shirt and 3 violets for these stitches in my head, by the way. And a beer.

[Because clearly Dean not looking out for where Dr. Castiel is walking is Dean's damn fault.]

[Dr. Jo Harvelle had tried her hardest to avoid Dean that day, volunteering to assist on a number of surgeries just to keep her schedule full, but it seemed her efforts were for nothing. It wasn't supposed to be this way. She was going to tell Dean about Castiel, tell him about her father's demands, everything, but he had to find out on his own. It was a mess, and no matter how many ways she thought about trying to make it up to Dean, she didn't know how to fix it.

They didn't teach classes on how to mend a broken heart.

When she stepped into the locker room to change at the end of her shift she hesitated, immediately spotting Dean and immediately wanting to turn back. But that wasn't who she was, wasn't what she stood for. Jo wouldn't run away from this. She walked calmly over to her locker, naturally the one right next to Dean's, and tried to put on a brave face.]

Hello, Dean.

Huh? Oh. She's fine. She's at the pool. I checked on her a little while ago.

...you remember that truck driver? He left me a lot of money. Like...a lot of money.

[See this? This is a not amused look. In fact it's a glare. Not only does the guy try to steal his girl but now he's wanting Dean to bend over and kiss his ass]

What the hell? Seriously? You ran into me, Jackass.

[And just for good measure, Dean kicks some files out of the way]

[Dean swallows hard a couple of times. He knew he'd run into her here. It was inevitable but he thought he'd been doing a nice job of avoiding her. He clears his throat and then scrubs a hand over his hair. Yeah this is...]

Uhm...hey.

[On City Place Anatomy this week...Dr. Chase goes insane]

...Working here? Did you hit your head, Dude?

[That earns Anna a chuckle]

Yeah...you could say that. Must be contagious.

[Oh, this was going to be a lot harder than she thought it would be. She stood staring into her locker for a little while, not actually looking at anything in there, but it was better than looking at Dean and saying something completely stupid.

... But then she was turning in her spot to face him, biting down hard on her bottom lip.]

I never wanted you to find out like that. I never thought--

I guess I just didn't believe any of it was happening. Still don't, really.

Have you gotten messages from Sam yet?

[She sounds more tired than she actually is, dealing with Sam tends to do that to her.]

This is a hospital, nurse. Maybe you need to think twice before lollygagging in the middle of the hall.

[The nerd in him comes out as he chases the files around almost desperately.]

[Dean is glaring slightly but when she faces him his look softens a bit. He can't help it.]

You couldn't stand up to him? You couldn't tell him that--

I just didn't think that mattered to you.

[Dean shakes his head in response]

No. I keep checking on him though. Why?

[Dean tries not to laugh at Dr. Castiel but he's not terribly successful]

Lollygagging? Maybe you missed the part where I've been working a twelve hour shift. Guess you were on the golf course for that.

[She's almost reluctant.]

I think he thinks I've been waiting for him, that we can get back together.

[Dean is quiet a moment because he wants Sam to have the things that make him happy. At one point Anna made him happy]

He has to know that you aren't...weren't.

I don't know that he does.

[She sighs again, then brings her hands to her face, rubbing her eyes a little.]

And I don't want to hurt him, I don't, not after all the progress he's made.

Maybe you could just...avoid him for a while? Let him get a little more stable.

That what I intend to do.

[She looks at him.]

But since when does Sammy like to be ignored?

He doesn't.

[And Dean looks down because he likes Anna and there's no way to soften this. Okay well there could be but it's Dean]

He likes being dumped less.

You think I don't know that? But what choice did I have?

[She sighs again.]

He needed to wake up, and I couldn't... live like that anymore.

I know that. I even get it.

[A sigh in return]

It's Sam. I'm supposed to take care of him. Make sure he's friggin' happy. Or something like that.

I was his fiancee, I was supposed to do the same. That was part of his problem, we kept making excuses for him, helping him out of trouble...

[She looks at him, sympathetic, but serious.]

If we had cut him off sooner, if we had said, "no more," do you think it would have gotten as bad as it did?

I don't know.

[It's a question that Dean has asked himself over and over again]

Maybe not. I just didn't think Sam would ever get involved in something like that.

[A long pause]

Would you have stayed with him if he hadn't gotten as bad as he did?

[It's a hard question to answer and she sits for a long time before she does.]

I don't know. We were already drifting, I think, but maybe that's just me trying to make myself feel better about leaving him.

Yeah...maybe.

[Dean clears his throat and looks up at Anna]

Let's not tell him. Just for a little while.

Right.

[She closes her eyes and leans back against the wall again.]

I feel like a heel about it.

Yeah well...[And he leans back against the wall beside her]

Is there anyway out of this that wouldn't make you feel that way?

[Because in Dean's opinion, at least part of him thinks Anna deserves to feel like a heel]

[She gives him a sharp look.]

Yeah, we could go back in time and make sure it never happened. But that's not an option, so I guess my answer is no.

[Hey, he likes Anna but he's firmly Team Sam here]

Yeah. So you'll have to suck it up. If you still care about him, do what's best for him.

He left you money? Why the hell would he do that?

Hell if I know. I've been trying to figure it out and I don't have a clue.
