[Dean has got a flashlight duct taped to a sawed off shotgun so that he can hold it the right way and still see. There's an army duffel bag thrown over one shoulder and pushed across his back so that it's out of the way. He's definitely creeping through a house that is definitely not his or Mary's. It's Gothic, falling down, dusty, covered in cobwebs and clearly abandoned. Slices of the rooms and hallways he's walking through are revealed in splashes of yellow light from the flashlight-shotgun combo he's rigged.

He stops in one of the larger rooms, sets down the duffel bag, keeping the shotgun pointed in a general direction that's neither his feet nor the ceiling while he rummages in the bag. There's a flash of movement, the device is jiggled and it falls out of his pocket to roll across the floor. There's a ghost rushing at Dean with a scream. It slashes out at him, retreats and then comes in again. Dean fires the shotgun directly at the apparition and it disappears.]

Thanks for not makin' me find the EMF detector.

[He gets a bag of rock salt out and starts salting some doorways and windows when he's done, he picks up the bag, slings it over his shoulder and then grabs the device. He shoves that in his pocket and continues on his way.]

I wouldn't be hunting them if they were harmless, Squirt. They can go corporal and they can kill people. They've nearly killed me and Sam more than once.

Oh. So how do they go corporeal? I don't get it. Maybe they aren't really ghosts, like maybe they're some kind of ghoul or something. Or! Or! A transparent demon!

Nah they're ghosts. I don't know how. They just are. Usually they're super pissed off or mean.

Okay I'm kind of a ghost novice and more of a big bad demons and god-like creatures pro. So I guess this is good info to have. And you're just shooting them with salt? No spells or anything? Cause I think my first thought would be to find a spell.

[What? She'd lived with Willow in a time when Buffy was pretty much only kind of there and Willow had been turning to magic for everything. She was influenced, okay?]

Rock salt but that won't kill them. It just makes them go away for a little while. To get rid of them you have to find the remains, salt them and burn them.

What does salt and burning them do, exactly? I mean aside from making dead person stir-fry? Which -- ew. But hey, still funny, haha.

[Dean smirks a little and shakes his head.] It gets rid of them. Sends them...back to where ever or maybe it just kills them. I don't know but they're not hurting people anymore so it works for me.

But there has to be a why to it. You don't know why? It just does? I'm never going to look at salt the same way again.

Salt is all tied up with purity in the old days. Ghosts are made of dark, evil, twisted anger shit.

By that theory salt should kill vampires too. And hell gods. And me, if you think about it. Cause I'm not always one with the side of good. I mean -- purity is not always me. Can salt kill me?

[Okay, now she's worried. She remembers very well what that Byzantium Knight had said about the key. She remembers very well what Glory said about the key. The key was evil. That didn't bode well for her.]

I'm guessing salt can't kill you and it's not the salt that kills the ghosts. It just contains them, I guess. They can't cross a salt line because it's pure. I'm pretty sure you're as pure as they come, Squirt.

And it doesn't do anything to vampires.

[She's gonna sigh now, more confused than ever. Thanks Dean.]

Salt is confusing now. Like parachute pants and people who double park. Totally not cool.

Nah, salt is simple and safe. Want me to show you how to use it? [All the safe memories in Dean's childhood were tainted with salt.]

You don't understand, I'm not -- if it hurts evil things that's bad. I mean I'm -- supposedly innocent and stuff, which is the whole point of why they -- why my sister -- it's complicated. I have to research how it hurts evil things and why first.

Research is good.

I'll see what I've got that'll help with that.
