This is Halloween | Itinere

pumpkin lights

Itinere does something every Halloween. It appears like magic on the morning of the 31st then disappears just as magically on November 1st. Sometimes it's more trick than treat, but this year in keeping with Itinere's recent graciousness, Halloween is all treat. The stores are bedecked in black and orange. Skeletons, more cartoonish than terrifying, hang on doors and there are pumpkins aglow with warm light everywhere. Even the foliage has turned red, gold, orange, and brown overnight. The air is just brisk enough to warrant a jacket or a sweater. The town has turned into a Fall Wonderland.

A fall festival has sprung up in the town square complete with rides, games, hot drink stands, and food trucks. Take a hayride or explore the corn maze. Try your hand at a shooting game or ring toss. Even if you lose, every vendor, shop, ride, and stand is handing out candy. You won't leave empty-handed.

It probably would be good for them to actually talk on a regular basis as opposed to the pointless flirting that Lucy usually does with Cas. She is happy to help him catch up. Feeding people is one way that Lucy shows she cares. He'll get there eventually if he cooks much with her. "Half the work is done for you," she tells him. "Plus, there's less love in a mix and everyone knows making things with love makes them taste better. Clearly.

Good. She's trying to be very clear with him. She's not always good at being clear. She just rolls her eyes at him. She is not buying his assurances. She's pretty sure she's witnessed such interest while working at the Houndstooth. It's fortunate for Castiel that Lucy gave up subtle years ago (maybe around the same time that she learned to talk). She considers his answer, taking a bite of pasta to give her a little more time to think about it.

"No. More no than I ever remember since I learned about sex. It's sort of become like a job that I don't want to do anymore and..." she pauses, trying to decide how honest to be with him. "I also don't know how I feel about that."

It is a matter of prospective, and hers is not any less valid, but Castiel would not call the flirting pointless. He can understand it better when she puts that way. Love is a human concept that he himself finds he desires too. And humans have a habit of placing affection on the labor they do for others. "I think I am beginning to understand." He nods. "Next time, it would please me greatly to make you a dish."

She's being very clear... just like how he is being very clear with her. In his record keeping of events, he is not offering anything close to assurances as he only knows it as the truth. There's a lot he needs to work on to understand people in general to be less of the clueless angel he is. Yes, food is very appealing, while she takes her time to think about, he slurps up some of the noodles, using the fork more as bridge to his mouth.

"I'm not sure I follow what you are trying to say. But if you do not want to have sex anymore, then you are more than free to do so." Oh Cas, grab a clue. Lucy is not saying that at all, though he can't hide a new sense of deflatedness. "Whatever you decide, I'm still interested in maintaining a relationship with you." So where does that leave them?

His perspective is important since he's the recipient of the flirting. Maybe that's what makes him different (better) than other angels: his desire for love. It's called acts of service, Cas and it's a love language. It is a good way to express affection, particularly when words are difficult or seem inadequate. His offer gets a bright, big smile out of her. "Yes, please," she quips. She'll appreciate the effort even if it's inedible. However, Cas is good at following instructions and really, that's all a recipe is.

The cluelessness has it's charm so Lucy isn't sure she'd like to see him lose it. However, it might make living in a human world easier.

She's definitely not saying that at all. She notices the way he deflates a little and it pleases her that he looks forward to it. "You are?" She latches onto that word 'relationship'. "Do you--what am I to you, Cassie?" she tilts her head at him, curiousity clear in her expression.

Then there was no flirting. It is a trait that makes him different from most. Where he learned it though, maybe it was time or from the Winchesters example. Faith is something he would likely more proscribe it to, but he could use to learn what it is called to humans. He has a long way to go still. However, he tell that she is pleased, which in turn allows him a sense of fulfilment before he's even delivered on the promise. "Tomorrow morning," he declares. She doesn't know it but she gave him something to do in the wee hours when he's inevitably awake.

It's not likely that he will ever lose his clueless demeanour, specially when he's lived much longer than the host he inhabits, but the years he's been on Earth and knowledge he's gained will continue to enlighten him. For instance, Lucy has gotten through to him with the reasons why he shouldn't eat toothpaste anymore. That's a feat even Sam couldn't do.

Apologies there. Honestly, Castiel has no idea what she is saying and he's learned enough over time to assume such language means some space is needed. Perhaps he needs a new teacher. When she looks pleased, he finds himself even more puzzled. "Yes." Did he not say that clearly enough? He goes over the exact words he said in his head, and what she means to him to find an answer for her. "I'm not sure there is a word that describes what you are," he decides. Because friend is close and lover ("girlfriend") isn't quite where he understands it is.

Oh Cas. It's impossible for her not to have feelings for him when he looks at things through that lens. Faith is something that he and Lucy could talk about. Angels probably have a different idea of faith than humans do. Whatever it is, Lucy thinks that Castiel is exactly the sort of angel that all angels should be. Maybe he's not the most pious, but piety is hardly important when he cares the way that he does (and he can blame the Winchesters for his loss of piety). He says tomorrow morning and she leans in, her hand going to the back of his head to press a kiss to his cheek. "Okay," she nods then grabs a kitchen towel from the counter next to her to wipe the sauce off his cheek that she got on him when she kissed his cheek.

There so many things to eat that taste better than toothpaste, like mint-chocolate-chip ice cream. She's glad she can enlighten him and teach him a little. It makes her happy and makes her feel like she's contributing something to his life.

Well, she didn't phrase it particularly clearly. He did say it clearly, but she's verifying. After all, he spends most of the month as a divine creature that she once only read about in the bible and a few days as a regular guy. Sometimes a girl needs to hear it more than once. She considers his words, lips pursing and twisting to the side as she thinks. "Okay." She pauses, mulling those words over. "Okay. So we're just going to have sex with each other in the future?"

Faith and its similarities to human sensibilities would be a good talk for them. They deserve to be on the same page. Lucy may even discover that his take on faith isn't so different for him as it for humans. Faith just means that he believes in humanity and most noteworthy the people he calls friends and deeply feels a connection to. He would actually thank the Winchesters for opening his eyes over the years he's known them. Well, something about the signals Cas is getting says tonight is not the right time to vanish and start cooking using the bunker kitchen to keep Lucy's eyes off the surprise. Castiel isn't the best at reading body language so he leans in, as well, and rather than find himself too off guard by the kiss she placed to his cheek, he does the next stupid thing to come to mind. "Your hair smells good," he compliments her after smelling it. "Thank you," he adds to her wiping sauce off his face.

Only she could help him find out that mint-chocolate is a better choice because she has his ear. Most people don't seem to recognize that Sam is a nag, Castiel doesn't know why. In any case, everything Lucy does for him makes him so happy. She's enlightened him to thin mints recently as well.

Clearly, he is not making himself very clear either. "Okay" makes her sound like she has doubts, and he knows switching from angel to human for a few days a month makes his emotions harder to decipher for himself. One thing that does not help is the human language being so limited. There's no word for what he wants to say in enochian either. In fact, it occurs to him angels to not have any word in relation to love and family either. He struggles, but does not hesitate to try putting something out there for her. "I- No. That's not the exact way I would put it. As they say, "I want more.""

Oh, Cas. That's precious and endearing that he believes in humans that way. See, he's learning to read Lucy's signals as well. She doesn't mind that he's caught off guard and leans in. In fact, it teaches her that he doesn't care if she's got spaghetti breath; he'll still kiss her. The stupid thing makes Lucy beam. She appreciates any sort of positive praise. "Thanks. It's strawberry shampoo." If it's a weird compliment or a stupid thing to say, Lucy doesn't show it.

Lucy is very patient and a little weird herself. She's also adventurous so Castiel gives her a chance to try new things and encourage him to try new things as well.

Angels are dumb. One would think with all their power and knowledge they'd have a thousand words for love and family. Lucy notices his struggle but isn't sure how to help other than to listen and let him struggle. Butterflies of panic and anticipation take wing in her stomach when he says that. She puts aside the bowl of pasta in favor of focusing on him. "More how? More what?".

Perhaps he is reading her signals, which is something he could not do at first. Spaghetti breath is not a reason he would ever think to excuse himself from trying to kiss her back. On the contrary, Castiel has from time to time has made it clear her cooking has made him happy. Some tongue action wouldn't bother him either. He has noticed many times up close and personal just how arousing her personal hygiene is. He lifts his chin just a smudge higher, noting (happy with) the success of his praise. "It suits you. Strawberries were once a fruit only the wealthiest Ancient Roman could have on the dinner table. They fought wars over land that would produce 500,000,000 pounds." Tell him (ie Discovery Channel) to stop "when."

Their intricacies may yet make them a match. If there is one thing Cas has a feeling about, it's that she's opened his eyes in ways or to things the Winchesters have not done yet. He had other ideas of what adventure meant before she was in the picture.

He won't deny that his species should have words for love and family. Garrison is the closest thing to family that would ever come to mind in describing his brothers and sisters. They blindly followed an absentee God for too long. Trusted God's words. She does not make his struggle any easier by adding more doubt and question to the little he is able to muster. However, setting aside the bowl of pasta, her focus assures him she is not asking for any other purpose than to understand the same way he is trying to. "I don't know. Us."

Seem he's adapting and learning. Good to know. The next time she does something garlicky, prepare yourself, Cas because she'll kiss him with garlic breath on purpose and giggle about it. She likes smell-good stuff and she is very, very girly. That look on him is super adorable. "Smart Romans. Though they probably didn't dip them in dark chocolate before eating them." She gets a slightly puzzled look on her face. "Or maybe they did. I know chocolate has been around a long time." In short, she's only going to encourage him.

If the Winchesters had opened his eyes to the same things that Lucy has, Lucy certainly hopes there was video. Lucy likes adventure in most things. She's happy to have Cas along for the ride with her. It makes adventure more fun, no matter what it is.

Definitely not the same sort of family or love, though Lucy is certain there's a certain amount of both those things in a garrison (at least she would hope so; Cas's existence prior to the Winchesters would have been very lonely and very sad otherwise in Lucy's opinion). Sorry, Cas. She's not very good at this stuff. He has her full attention and his words make her relax. He's not asking for a commitment that could end in a broken heart (yes he is, he's just not using those labels). The smile that curves her lips is something more content and satisfied than her previous, beaming smiles. "Come here," she tells him, reaching out to grab the lapels of his coat and pull him closer, her legs wrapping around his waist to achieve the same thing. Once she's got him where she wants him, she tilts her head up into a kiss.

See, Cas, you don't have to understand it all to say the right thing.
