71st Hunt [Action]

[Dean is underneath the Impala, legs sticking out, the sound of him sweet talking the car coming in quiet mutterings. He's changing out the fuel filter today and having a bit of trouble with it sticking. After a few minutes it comes free and it puts the new one in. Once that's done, he finishes up and slides out from beneath the car looking for someone to kiss.]

[She swats his arm lightly.] I was going to remain in the dark about what sort of sharp pointy object you got your hands on.

[Yet another memory she doesn't have.] And it's still stuck there?

Yup. Dad probably could have got it out with a knife but he just left it.

[And he moves aside so she can slide in the backseat if she wants and see for herself. He's going to go start the car and turn on the AC so she can hear the rattling lego in the vent.]

And Sammy didn't cry every time he saw it stuck in there?

[Slide in she does. There's a definite smile on her face but she looks up at the rattling sound.]

Alright, what did you do to cause that?

Nah. Dad told him that was the solider's post and he had to stay at his post. That's what good soldiers do.

[He looks up at her in the rearview mirror and grins.]

Stuck a lego in there when I was three.

[She laughs at that.] He would say that.

Just one? Sounds like you put more than one in there.

[Dean smirks a little and shrugs.]

Maybe a couple. [Or four]

Back there on the driver's side, there's a stain. Grape juice. Sam was...six or so. Lady next door gave him the purple kind that he wasn't supposed to take in the car but he did and he spilled it.

[There's also a blood stain, a big one but he's not telling Mary where that one came from.]

[Of course Mary has to look at the stain.] Did it stain his clothes too?

And his hands. Dad had him scrub them until they were red. [He won't tell her that he took Sam's swats for him.]

[She laughs.] How long were they red?

Coupla hours at least. He didn't ever take purple grape juice in the Impala again though.

I bet he didn't. Though I bet you boys eat in here all the time now.

[Dean chuckles a little and nods.]

Sammy bi-gripes when I get extra onions.

That does not sound healthy at all.

[he thinks about that, frowny facing a moment.]

It tastes good.

[he's pondering other things to tell her about the car that aren't sad or things she doesn't want to know like the first time he got laid it was in the back seat of the Impala.]

Sammy shut himself in the trunk one time. We were playing hide and seek. He was there for like three hours. Scared the crap out of me.

I should teach you how to cook some healthy meals.

[Yeah, that sounds like the best plan ever. Then Dean wouldn't have to go out to diners for some of his meals.]

When I get home no playing hide and seek near the car. [She doesn't seem TOO panicked. Only because they both seem to be okay, but oh man, had she been there she would have freaked.]

[He considers this a moment and then nods. It might be nice. Not that he'll be in one place long enough to cook.] Okay. That'd be good. I can do spaghetti-o's and Lucky Charms now. [Because pouring a bowl of cereal is cooking.]

Yeah...I'll try to remember.

[She laughs happily at that.] Spaghetti-o's and Lucky Charms is not cooking a healthy meal.

[There it is again, that slight hesitation. Mary raises an eyebrow wondering if he's ready to tell her.]

[He shrugs and chuckles a little bitterly. There's some shuffling and he takes a deep breath. He's so close to telling her. So close to wanting to tell her. he puts both hands on the wheel of the Impala and grips it tightly]

When you leave here--if you leave here--you won't remember any of this.

[It's her turn to have a moment of silence. Just looking over all of the little memories her boys left inside the car.]

Then we'll just make the most of it. [It's said with determination because as much as she'd like to get home to her young children she also doesn't want to leave him alone here.]

[it's good she's in the backseat and he's sitting in the driver's seat where he feels like he has some control in his life, where he doesn't have to look at her.]

November 2, 1983...you died. The demon came to collect on your deal and...I got Sammy out. Dad tried to--he couldn't help and-[He stops, the words catching in his throat.]

This was home.

[That causes an even longer silence. She should have known the demon just wouldn't forget. Mary had wanted a family but she'd lost not only her parents but John too and she was so weak.

Fingers clench the leather seat so tightly that it squeaks. That was exactly what she was going back to. How could she not have seen it? The flickering light in Sammy's room as they left - the one in the hallway - the unease she felt on arriving here.

And she had allowed him access into her home. Near her children. Dean even knew about her deal.]

I'm so sorry.

[He shakes his head, not trusting his voice for a moment.]

No. I would have--[Stops because if they're being honest...]

I've done the same thing. For Sammy. I get it. I hate it but I get it.

[There are tears in his eyes now and he is struggling to hold them all back.]

[Not only did she let that thing near her family but they had made her same mistakes. She'd wanted out of that life but instead she'd brought her family into it. Mary's not even trying to fight her tears.]

I just wanted a family. I wanted you boys more than anything and I wanted you to always be safe.

I know.

[He remembers her speech.]</small. I wish...I wish you could have--it'd all worked out.

Things rarely ever go the way we want when dealing with demons.

[If he was a hunter then he'd know how true that was.]

I love headcanon. It helps fill in so much of their lives.

Yeah it does and there's a lot of their childhood that's canon but not enough

Hey, twenty+years is a lot of time to cover.
