Mom! I'm home! [Dean yells this as he opens the door and prepares for the barrage of brothers and sisters as he goes about hanging up his coat, toe-heeling his shoes off and general 'I'm home' sort of routines.] Sorry I'm late. My favorite sister piled all the paper work for the last week on me.

[Okay to be honest it was all the paperwork he'd been avoiding for the last month week. He really thinks he ought to get special consideration considering the chief is his sister. She has other ideas.]

I'm just going to hang up these signs. The ones about recycling? [Your daughter is a environmentalist. But really she's sneaking out to see her boyfriend.]

It's almost dinner. Can't it wait until tomorrow? [By that she means: It's going to wait until tomorrow.]

[Summer's expression of defeat, you have it Mama. She pouts a little] Fine.

[Mary pets her hair.] Now why don't you go put those up before they end up part of someone's accident.

[She frowns, shoulders slumping some] I wanted to go see Ryan. Can I invite him over later?

You can invite him over now, if you'd like. There's enough food for him to join us. [Hey, Mom isn't totally unreasonable.]

Roast, potatoes, carrots, corn on the cob and I baked a couple of pies for desert. Cam brought home salad if you want an appetizer.

[She knows better than to ask if it's organic.] Okay. I'll go send him a message. [She smiles and moves to give her mom a hug] Thanks, Mom.

[Mary buys a bit of organic food just for Summer, especially when getting fruits and vegetables. Of course Mary returns the hug lovingly, squeezing her tightly.] You're welcome, sweetie.

[Summer doesn't have a mommy back home so this is even sweeter. She just hugs her even closer and smiles.] I'll do the dishes after, I promise. Ryan will help me or I'll kick his... shin.

[When this is over Mary will gladly play the mother-figure role for Summer. She places a kiss in Summer's hair.] You can at least help with the clean-up but I don't expect any of you to do the dishes by yourself.
