71st Hunt [Action]

[Dean is underneath the Impala, legs sticking out, the sound of him sweet talking the car coming in quiet mutterings. He's changing out the fuel filter today and having a bit of trouble with it sticking. After a few minutes it comes free and it puts the new one in. Once that's done, he finishes up and slides out from beneath the car looking for someone to kiss.]

[She is trying so hard not to laugh at that and take this all serious-like. Instead she balances the tray with one hand and points to her cheek.]

If it helps I always loved kisses from you planted right here. [Okay, there was a bit of amusement in that sentence.]

[It's embarrassing okay! He does lean in and kiss her on the cheek though.] Lemonade for me?

[Hey, as long as there wasn't tongue than Mary would have been alright. They are family after all.]

It sure is. You've been out here for a while so I thought you could use a drink.

[Having his Mom here is pretty much as awesome as he thought it would be.]

I needed to change the oil and the fuel filter, fiddle with a couple of other things but I think she's running smooth now. [He hesitates and then nods toward the Impala.]

Come sit down. There's a couple of things I want to show you about her.

[She didn't get to be there for their childhood and she never will but he can give her the little bits of childhood they do still have.]

[She seems to think something over for a minute.]

If I didn't know any better I'd think this was just some normal city with the way ordinary things go on.

[With his next words she puts down the tray and moves over to the Impala.]

I'm pretty bad with mechanics, your father won't even let me near the car with tools. [Though Mary doesn't think that's what he's going to show her.]

Some days it is just some normal city.

[He shakes his head, opens the passenger door and points to the panel in the back that he and Sam carved their names into.]

I was pretty sure when we did that, Dad was gonna have a fit and I didn't care but he took a look at it, almost smiled and then got us all in the car. I was 'bout eight. Maybe.

[Mary's so caught up in the memory as he tells it to her that the conversation about the city slips her mind completely. Fingers trail gently over the letters as if she can just picture them doing it. It's not a memory she has but she hopes to one day if the wistful smile on her face means anything.]

I almost want to scold you for playing around with the car.

[He just chuckles at that.] But not the knife? [He jokes with her and then points to the ashtray in the back passenger door. The 'lid' to it was broken off years ago.]

Sammy was six when he shoved that army man in there. He used to spread 'em all out over the backseat and floorboard so they could go to war. He had...at least three dozen of the damn things but he cried when he couldn't get that one out.

[And when Dean rebuilt the Impala, he made damn sure that army man got stuck back in the ash tray.]

[She swats his arm lightly.] I was going to remain in the dark about what sort of sharp pointy object you got your hands on.

[Yet another memory she doesn't have.] And it's still stuck there?

Yup. Dad probably could have got it out with a knife but he just left it.

[And he moves aside so she can slide in the backseat if she wants and see for herself. He's going to go start the car and turn on the AC so she can hear the rattling lego in the vent.]

And Sammy didn't cry every time he saw it stuck in there?

[Slide in she does. There's a definite smile on her face but she looks up at the rattling sound.]

Alright, what did you do to cause that?

Nah. Dad told him that was the solider's post and he had to stay at his post. That's what good soldiers do.

[He looks up at her in the rearview mirror and grins.]

Stuck a lego in there when I was three.

[She laughs at that.] He would say that.

Just one? Sounds like you put more than one in there.

[Dean smirks a little and shrugs.]

Maybe a couple. [Or four]

Back there on the driver's side, there's a stain. Grape juice. Sam was...six or so. Lady next door gave him the purple kind that he wasn't supposed to take in the car but he did and he spilled it.

[There's also a blood stain, a big one but he's not telling Mary where that one came from.]

[Of course Mary has to look at the stain.] Did it stain his clothes too?

And his hands. Dad had him scrub them until they were red. [He won't tell her that he took Sam's swats for him.]

[She laughs.] How long were they red?

Coupla hours at least. He didn't ever take purple grape juice in the Impala again though.

I bet he didn't. Though I bet you boys eat in here all the time now.

[Dean chuckles a little and nods.]

Sammy bi-gripes when I get extra onions.

That does not sound healthy at all.

[he thinks about that, frowny facing a moment.]

It tastes good.

[he's pondering other things to tell her about the car that aren't sad or things she doesn't want to know like the first time he got laid it was in the back seat of the Impala.]

Sammy shut himself in the trunk one time. We were playing hide and seek. He was there for like three hours. Scared the crap out of me.

I should teach you how to cook some healthy meals.

[Yeah, that sounds like the best plan ever. Then Dean wouldn't have to go out to diners for some of his meals.]

When I get home no playing hide and seek near the car. [She doesn't seem TOO panicked. Only because they both seem to be okay, but oh man, had she been there she would have freaked.]

[He considers this a moment and then nods. It might be nice. Not that he'll be in one place long enough to cook.] Okay. That'd be good. I can do spaghetti-o's and Lucky Charms now. [Because pouring a bowl of cereal is cooking.]

Yeah...I'll try to remember.

[She laughs happily at that.] Spaghetti-o's and Lucky Charms is not cooking a healthy meal.

[There it is again, that slight hesitation. Mary raises an eyebrow wondering if he's ready to tell her.]

I love headcanon. It helps fill in so much of their lives.

Yeah it does and there's a lot of their childhood that's canon but not enough
