dudeimbatman: (So damn happy)
Dean Winchester ([personal profile] dudeimbatman) wrote2022-12-03 07:56 pm

Merry Christmas you filthy animal

Thanksgiving had been awesome. Dean had cooked every conceivable Thanksgiving dish and they'd all eaten until they thought they were going to burst. He'd spent the next day in a food coma but had quickly gotten up to speed on getting the bunker ready for Christmas. There had been a shit ton of decorations in storage, but he'd replaced a few lights and added a singing Santa or two.

Ruby had embroidered stockings with everyone's name. She hated embroidery, but she was damn good at it. Jo had contributed a recipe for Christmas punch and one for eggnog. She insisted that they needed to have it regularly so they could tweak the recipe. That way it would be perfect for Christmas Eve. Dean was pretty sure Jo was just enjoying her first real Christmas since God knows when. Dean wasn't complaining. Lucy hadn't stopped baking since the tree had gone up, and didn't show any signs of slowing down.

Ruby was also systematically removing, altering, or replacing everything that said Christmas. The bunker was turning into a politically (or demonically) correct wonderland: Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving had been calmer than any of their previous attempts to celebrate holidays. They were more settled in their lives now that Chuck wasn't behind the curtain pulling the strings. Sam would never tell Dean this, only Ruby knew that Thanksgiving successfully helped him gain three pounds. Since then, Sam had been more adamant about keeping a healthy routine. He frequently made the time to run in the morning before joining everyone for breakfast.

The stockings were the first thing he noticed upon coming down the stairs. He recognized Ruby's work when he saw it. The colors for their individual names were a nice touch. It smelled a lot like the bakery was next door to the meat house so it tipped him off that Lucy was likely in the kitchen with Dean. Jack had followed Lucy and Jo's example and asked if they would help him make an angel cake. Cas was on board with time spent with Lucy and Jack as well as spiriting in and out for any ingredients they needed.

It was also noticeable that any reference to Christmas had been switched out for words pertaining to the 'Holidays'. His brother was the first person he came across. Pointing at the word change over by the door. "Your doing?" Ruby isn't the first person he'd guess. There were any number of reasons he could figure, such as Jo wanting to open her experience up to all holidays. Sam wasn't one to jump to conclusions.

If there was anybody that could motivate him faster than his own sheer willpower to, it'd be Ruby. The teasing had gone over as well as anything else they ever joked about-- it was plain as day Ruby was flirting. His initial response was to roll his eyes "Thank you so much for your observation" but in fact his eyes said much more with how turned on he was. He agreed to her terms to never speak first but on the condition she'd crawl out from under the covers in exchange for whatever deep fried crack she wanted that morning.

Talent is what Ruby had whether she wanted to admit it or not. Sometime later in the day, Sam would go back and trace out his name on the stocking Ruby made and comment just how much no machinery could possibly match up to her work. It might take Sam a while to come to that conclusion-- he was still reeling from Thanksgiving. Considering everything Cas believes he's done for the Winchesters, the multiple trips to the store seem inconsequential but important nonetheless. As for what angels look like when they're in love...

It probably looks something like Jack too. One reason why he might seem enthusiastically set to make the angel cake perfect is because Allison is joining them later that day. He's been seeing her a lot since bringing back people to life that rightly didn't deserve a tragic end.

The snort seems uncalled for, until Ruby's name is thrown out there. "Ruby?" He also looks around, partially at the tree and the finer decor that remain untouched before the realization hits him. His fiancé was allergic to the word poorly crafted into the season. "I'm fine with it either way." He shrugs. "Still looks like, I guess, a piece of Santa's village found its way down here." Which he knows is something Dean wants. The fact that they have the people they care about around them is all Sam cares about.

She's very good about not hurting his feelings by watching his tells-- not many people are able to pick up on them as well as Ruby or Dean do and that is because of trust. It does slow down their runs when she opens them up to conversation as he can't maintain a brisk speed while requiring extra breathes. The conversation is always welcome, though, and a highlight to the mornings. He would half argue that she loves to see him sweat too.

Yes, of course, Ruby would brush it off; Sam, however, feels she deserves to be complimented when her effort is appreciated. That's how their relationship works. It's because of Dean that Sam agreed to it in the first place. His brother wasn't wrong to bring up that they need to 'live a little.' Perhaps a better way to phrase what his trips to the store had been would be little to no effort. Lucy could ask him all day long to grab different things and it wouldn't seem like any trouble.

Allison had that going for her. In fact, some of those revived that were alive during Chuck's wipe had taken it more poorly. The world at large had convinced themselves nothing had happened while someone like Allison asked questions and opened herself up to the answers. Jack was happiest when she accepted his company even knowing his role in the universe. He had fallen hard like many teenagers/youth in their early 20s before him.

"Sounds like you have an agreement at least." Unspoken or otherwise. His brow raises, "We have a Santa now?" He hadn't seen one coming in, if Dean meant some blow up version. Otherwise, he was certain of one thing. "Right anyway, I think Santa is safe. She's not allergic to Santa." He casts another look around, knowing the importance to his brother. "Honestly, it's a lot like those houses we drove past as kids. You always said you would do it better than them one day. ...Think you finally accomplished that." Never mind that some areas of the bunker were heavily decorated.

There's no denying that he's always on his toes when they're alone.

He wouldn't change their relationship dynamic either. She's responsible for a lot of things she's worthy of recognition for. It's because Lucy asks for what she desires that Cas began to clue into her as a person. They're closer to each other for it. More bourbon? No problem. Someone might have to remind him to take cash to the places he visited later. Snuggles under the blanket is something he's starting to see an appreciation for as it brings them closer.

Jack talked about her non-stop when she wasn't around.

What matters is the two of them find some way to keep the peace now. Sam used to get fed up with their antics. Dean's grumble now is nothing to fuss over. Ruby helps him see a future between hunting and something remotely domestic down in the bunker. He scoofs, but it's a genuine smile at Dean's chest puffed out. "You did good. It's honestly a little scary how quickly you pulled this together." Dean can volunteer the information on where it all came from or not. His brother can add whatever else he likes as long as Santa turns off at night. "You went all out on the food, too." Which is Dean's opportunity to go over that. In fact, he can't help but smile at some of the things Dean made at Thanksgiving. His brother was amazing with food.

RUBY

[personal profile] peaceonearth 2023-01-06 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ruby hasn't traditionally loved Christmas. She's sure they celebrated it in some form when she was human, but it's not one of those memories she was able to keep. She's only given Christmas a shot the last few years with Sam. This year she decided to take control of the things that make the holidays difficult for her by removing Christ from Christmas.

When she's not scrubbing the bunker of Christ, she's in the kitchen making perogis or sitting on the couch knitting or reading smutty romances. She's actually making an effort this holiday to not hide in the room she shares with Sam.

Re: RUBY

[personal profile] weirddreams 2023-01-06 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sam was inclined to side with Ruby on making Christmas inclusive. To keep matters civil between his brother and her, he suggested Yule Tide or Happy Holidays in place of the Christ in Christmas. His refereeing was hit or miss. But thing that was not, watching Ruby come out of her shell was attractive and brought him more into the spirits.

Sometime before the 25th even, he made an effort to slip out of the bunker to shop for presents, but ended up having to tell his family they couldn't go with him for that specific reason. This year would be a first for so many of them; it would be a first as a family together without threats looming over them. He thought Ruby deserved something special for the occasion and a smutty book wouldn't be the answer this time. Jack and his girlfriend, Allison, would be apart of it and they deserved a little magic too.

After shopping, he came into his room and pointed out the drawer he would be placing the wrapped gifts into. He trusted Ruby not to open her gift early.

On Christmas day, he handed a small box with a bow rather than wrapped the usual way to her from under the tree. It was charmed from a local white witch that sold in town but fully vetted to ensure her claims about the dose of health magic it contend were true. "Happy 25th, Ruby" he smiled warmly. There were other gifts with her name on them, but he wanted to be the first to give her his.

The bickering with Dean is harmless enough. Dean lets the changes happen without much protest.

Ruby wouldn't have dreamed of looking in the drawer. Half the magic of a gift is having it given. She can't help but smile softly when Sam hands his gift to her first. She arches an eyebrow at him, a teasing smile sneaking across her lips. "I don't know whether to be disappointed or pleased it can be opened in front of people, Puppy," she teases him as she unties the bow and lifts the lid on the box. Her mischief turns to genuine surprise and gratitude when she sees the heart-shaped necklace inside. She can feel its magic even if she's unsure what it does. She swallows past emotion as she lifts the chain to slip it over her head. "Actual hearts aren't shaped..." she trails off because they both know what a heart looks like. "I love it. What does it do?" she asks as her fingers go up to touch the heart.

Most of Ruby's gifts for everyone are handmade blankets, but she'd found Sam's gift a few months ago while she was tracking down a demon that had been making a mess of this new world they were all trying to live in. It had been a little bit of an accident. She'd been in a used bookstore looking for a few books to occupy her free time when she'd found a copy of Pablo Neruda's love poems in the original Spanish from 1971, the year he'd won the noble prize for literature. She'd marked the page with her favorite poem with a fancy brass page marker. She'd tucked the rest of the markers inside the book then wrapped it up in a piece of red velvet with a hand-tied elaborate bow. She hands it over to Sam. "Happy holidays."

Re: RUBY

He had given her books often enough that he couldn't consider them anything extraordinary. The pendant had stuck out more since it wasn't that long ago that agreed to take the next step with him. He can't help but smile more widely when handing her the box and watching her light up. "You tell me," he winks at her and watches her open the lid. His own expression grows softer as he watches her react. It might not mean the same to both of them but the heart symbolizes to him how much she means to him and reminds him that her heart is beating again. The small amount of magic inside was a bonus. He holds back a chuckle. "Wouldn't want something that looked like a fist?" The question isn't one he expects her to answer. Using his hands, he directs her to the inside the pendant. "The feather right there signifies health. It has a small dose of magic to heal minor ailments." He is aware that she is a capable demon but it will never stop him from wishing for her safety.

Clearly, Ruby knows Sam well. He used to write his own poetry in high school and college and a collection of his works remains in his memory box at the foot of their bed. He looks her deep in eyes twice. The first time when she hands the gift out to him and again after carefully unwrapping the velvet from the book. Half of him doesn't doubt her gift giving capabilities, the other half is ecstatic and surprised she found the Spanish copy of Pablo's noble prize winning literature. He looks down again only to flip open the page she book marked and read the words with a open heart. "This is... Where did you find this?" He runs his fingers over the age of the paper, following the text. "I love it. Thank you."

Yes, he is always giving her books and she always appreciates them, but it's nice that he put in the thought and time to find something different. Of course, Dean makes gagging noises at Ruby and Sam. Jo promptly puts an end to it by elbowing him in the ribs hard. "Definitely pleased," she tells him as she runs her fingertips over the heart. For Ruby, the heart is symbolic of her having Sam's heart. She's also aware of the emotional symbol that hearts generally hold for humans in this era. "I think most people would consider wearing a pendant shaped like an actual heart morbid," she responds, but she didn't say she wouldn't want it if Sam gave it to her. She brushes her thumb over the feather and leans in to press a kiss against his lips. "I love it," she tells him as she clasps the chain around her neck.

Ruby watches him open the gift with equal parts excitement for his reaction and nervousness. She raises both shoulders in a shrug at his question. "An estate sale outside of El Paso when I was there on a hunt." He probably remembers she was gone for several days hunting a La Llorona. "A little old Mexican grandma had died. She had a bunch of old books that her family was practically giving away. I snatched up several Spanish romance novels and that."

Re: RUBY

Sam glances at Dean gagging briefly before returning his attention to Ruby. (Jo is a star.) It wasn't worth ruining the moment to address it. "It looks good on you." The words might seem familiar because he tells her every chance he gets. It's more than just his heart that belongs to her but the symbolism isn't lost on either of them. That is enough. He kisses her lips back, short but long enough to savor for a moment, ignoring what could either be described as more gagging or groaning in the background.

Her gift is perfect. He pages through some of the text to feel the age of the pages at his fingers before closing the novel against his chest. His eyes flash with recognition of the hunt she spoke of. They were in contact as usual and he helped her with some of the lore in hunting the La Llorona. Sad that more than a Mexican grandma died in the week. Ruby saving the book in his hands made him smile more though. "That's my girl."

After a second, "I was wondering why you picked up the novels in Spanish and a suitcase." Normally, Ruby didn't bring things back, let alone travel with much. She traveled lighter than any Winchester ever had at any point of time.

ALLISON

[personal profile] lopeholt 2023-01-06 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Allison is incredibly thankful that this year she's not only alive, but she's got people to spend the holidays with. She makes the rounds thanks to Jack-Uber to see her friends one evening before Christmas and then to see her dad for a few days. She calls on Jack again when they're both ready for her to show up at the bunker.

Allison has been to the bunker often enough that she's reasonably comfortable there and she likes that it's full of people this time of year. She and Jo have a little bit in common since they're both formally dead. She spends most of her time talking to people in whatever room they're in. For Dean, it means she's in the kitchen even though she has no experience cooking. Of course, Jo is often in the kitchen as well, but she's not there for Allison or the cooking. Allison might even be found downstairs on the shooting range with her bow getting some practice in.

Cas usually has no business in the kitchen nor the shooting range, but it just so happens he comes across her aura unaccompanied by Jack near by. This sparks her curiosity and leads him to stick his head in. "90 meters. That's formidable aim." He doubts the average archer could accomplish that in their lifetime. Unbeknownst to him, 70 meters is a feat in competition.

She is often by Jack's side especially when she's here. She's comfortable enough, but she still feels like it's his family. She recognizes Castiel's voice and lowers the bow as she turns to look at him, a smile coming quickly to her lips."Thanks. I was afraid I'd gotten rusty. " She sets the bow down on a table. "Do you shoot?"

Re: ALLISON

Castiel is fond of Allison's moral character and how she puts a smile on Jack's face everytime she shows up. She's welcome at the bunker without any question. "No. I do not have the aptitude for shooting. This room doesn't see much use." He shakes his head. Sometime ago, he gave Jack permission to tell Allison that he was an angel so he figured she could draw her own conclusion from there or ask more questions.

He turns to the target that had not originally been around. "I like what you've done with the place..." There was more functionality. "Jack informed me you used to help your friends out with unfriendly werewolves. Are you still planning to hunt?" Given her connection Jack, Castiel allowed himself to feel concerned where Allison saw herself next.

Re: ALLISON

[personal profile] lopeholt 2023-02-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
There was a time when Allison's moral character suffered a little. She did the things her father thought were right instead of the things she thought were right. Eventually, even her father had come around. As for the smile she puts on Jack's face, that's entirely mutual. "I've never had a personal shooting range. Even when competing, I set up targets to practice outside. Yes, Allison knows that Cas is an angel. It had taken her a little bit to digest that information, but she was able to accept that Jack is a god--the new god, so she's certainly able to accept that Cas is an angel. "Jack says you're dating Lucy and Jack's mother was human. Is that--do a lot of angels date humans?"

She glances around and smiles. "Thanks. Dean told me I could do whatever I wanted to it." It worked better this way for her purposes. "Yes. My family has hunted werewolves for centuries. Some of my friends are werewolves so...now we just hunt the monsters that hurt people."

Re: ALLISON

[personal profile] tiredofurinating 2023-02-15 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Father's pushing for their children to follow blindly is a story as old as time. Cas is no exception. It's just proof that his feelings about her character are correct. "Which is your preference? Outside or in?" He cared enough to find out. Seemed to him that they could make it a fun event for everyone to let off some steam or have fun. There's a low chuckle at her question, though it genuinely catches him. It challenges what he knows thus far about the remaining angels on earth. "I suppose some of us do. Not all. There is no one answer for your question. We're scattered on Earth and in Heaven. Jack is a special case born as the result of one angel borrowing a host. We need permission to walk among you. I've been among humans longer than most angels."

He is impressed she moved it all on her own. Of course, he is learning once more what it takes to live with the frustrations of being human and his weaker power. "That sounds like Dean." He recalls her family name of Argent when she speaks of them hunting werewolves. No, he does not recognize the legacy. He only had one only stinct on earth in the last 100 years before rescuing Dean. But it does seem connected to her family. "Yes, I imagine some stay out of trouble. Tell me more about your friends."

LUCY

Lucy loves Christmas. It's an excuse to everyone together, to drink, and to bake. She's already done an astounding amount of baking. She's content to let Dean do most of the cooking though while she sips on Jo's alcoholic Christmas punch and egg nog.

She spends some time in the kitchen doing a little more baking (because you can never have enough baked goods in her opinion) then moves to the living room to watch Christmas movies while drinking hot chocolate with a healthy dose of rumchata in it.

Resident Evil was not a movie that Jack expected when the majority of them this holiday had been Christmas movies...

But Lucy was into it so he was trying to follow along. The most uncomfortable part is watching innocent people succumb to the virus in the movie. Jack turns to Lucy, "Seems unrealistic to me. People would help each other get through that." He's confident that's what they'd do.

Re: LUCY

It's one of Lucy's comfort movies. She does love the occasional Christmas movie with their predictable plots and happily ever afters, but she often prefers action movies and watching the hero save the day.

She sips at her bourbon while they watch the movie, Lucy keeping up semi-regular commentary. She's seen the movie so often that she can quote most of it. She smiles at Jack then leans over and kisses his cheek. She wants to tell him that he's precious and naive; she wonders to wonder at how he can retain that when he is who he is, but she's also very grateful that he has. It's what makes him Jack and not Chuck or some other idiot that doesn't deserve any power. "There'd be heroes for sure like Alice. Like Dean, Cas, and you," she points out.

Re: LUCY

[personal profile] nougatlover2017 2023-01-27 03:32 am (UTC)(link)

Jack hasn't been exposed to many movies given his age. Lucy introducing him to more is met with enthusiasm even though the genre borderlines horror and survival.

It amazes Jack that she can repeat full dialog at key scenes and he sometimes watches her mouth the words rather than actually watch the movie. Her kiss makes his one cheek appear redder than the other. Even now it doesn't escape him that Lucy is a nice person who just happens to be good looking. Chuck is the furthest person from who he wants to be. Dean, Cas and Sam are all role models in each their own certain way. Lucy was a role model of life. "What do you think other people would do?"

mightbeconcussed: (Let me think...no)

Re: LUCY

[personal profile] mightbeconcussed 2023-02-01 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
He'll have to tell her he doesn't like that genre and she'll introduce him to different movies.

She's sen it a few times. It doesn't bother her that he watches her instead of the movie. She's so engrossed in it that she doesn't even really notice. She is also flattered that Jack thinks she's good-looking. Lucy doesn't have a lot of inhibitions, but Jack is her boyfriend's pseudo kid so she flirts with him minimally and always harmlessly. She'd get teary and hug Jack very hard if he told her she was a role model. Lucy considers Jack's question carefully. "I think some people will hold up and protect the people they love even if it hurts other people. I think others will make a power grab and try to control everything. Some people might use it as an excuse to hurt others and that's where Dean, Cas, and Sam come in."

Re: LUCY

[personal profile] nougatlover2017 2023-02-16 04:48 am (UTC)(link)

He'll give it a try for Lucy rather than spoil it for her. Besides, so far it isn't frightful.

If he has those thoughts for longer than a second, he puts them out of his head. She's more like a sister the way she treats him. He smiles at her answer, letting the idea grow deeper within his own belief system to protect those that need it. His smile remains for a long time as he continues to watch the movie silently beside her. As it goes on, that message is seen in the protagonist's actions. He grows more fond of the movie.

"I guess it doesn't matter what those few people do," he allows his thoughts to shape into words. "They won't win. Dean, Cas, Sam, and even this character in the movie won't let that happen."
